Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. It will create some amazing memories to mark the start of a life together with your partner. But memories alone can fade over time. Good quality wedding photographs are the best way to capture those memories and hold onto them for a lifetime.

There are thousands of photographers out there ready and willing to take your hard-earned cash in return for a few snap-shots of your big day. But with so much choice, how do you know who to choose? Here are a few handy tips for you:

Work out your budget

Your wedding photography typically accounts for around 10% of your total budget. It’s a good idea to work out how much you’re able to spend on wedding photography before you start looking. If you’re getting married in a different city, the photographer will have to travel to your venue and may add travel expenses to the price quoted to you.

Choose a photographic style.

Long after the cake has been eaten and the confetti swept up, your wedding photos will be the only reminder of your big day. It’s fairly important to think about how you’d like to remember your big day. There’s the traditional photography style involving staged photos of you two posing with various combinations of the wedding party arranged in height order. You could consider a contemporary style of wedding photography; this is often much more relaxed and informal, spontaneously capturing you and your new spouse laughing and enjoying your magical day.

Book your photographer in advance

Some wedding photographers can get fully booked for up to 2 years. If you’re planning a summer wedding or getting married on a Saturday, you’ll need to book your photographer as early as possible to ensure you get the one that you want. As soon as you’ve set the date, it’s a good idea to start your search for a photographer.

Check the small print.

It’s advisable to check the finer details of what you’ll be getting from your agreement with your photographer. Ask for a breakdown of what the quote covers. For example, you’ll need to know how long the photographer will be on-site with you and how many prints are included as standard.
