Just as certain styles of clothing fits and flatters any body shape, wedding dresses come in a wide range of silhouettes to complement a bride’s shape. A wedding day is the time to feel exquisite and beautiful, so it is important to find the right shape and silhouette to accomplish that. When shopping for a wedding gown, one question you must ask yourself is what type of dress do you want and what body feature do you want to accentuate.

As soon as you narrow down the possibilities, finding a dress is that much easier. Here are some of the most common wedding dress silhouettes that look amazing on a variety of brides:

Ballgown – For the bride who always wanted to feel like a princess the day of her wedding, a ballgown is the perfect choice. This silhouette is best described as a fitted bodice and voluminous skirt, and is a beautiful option for brides having a formal wedding or wanting to camouflage wide hips or thicker lower body.

A-Line – An A-line wedding silhouette provides volume at the skirt without the volume of a ballgown. The bodice is usually fitted and the hemline flares into an ‘A’ shape, making it one of the more popular silhouettes because it flatters most body shapes. Accents around the hips are a beautiful way to add detail to this style dress.

Mermaid – Brides looking to show off curves will look fabulous in a mermaid-style silhouette. This style is very form fitting and flares out at the knees. Many mermaid style gowns have a stunning amount of detail in the flared skirt and neckline, leaving the bodice clean and simple. A perfect choice when you want both a fitted dress with volume at the hemline.

Sheath – Some brides prefer a delicate, ultra feminine style and the sheath silhouette is beautiful for that idea. The fabric skims and drapes across the body for a romantic touch. Slim, tall brides look fabulous in a sheath-style gown.

In order to choose the perfect wedding dress, try to get an idea of the silhouette you like. Once you select a basic style, it will just be about finding a beautiful gown with all of the right details and accents.
